Cover for "Missing Jack" by Rebecca Elliot, Children's Book Author & Illustrator

Earlier this week, Alexandra had the good fortune of being one of 15 illustrators to have their submitted "Missing Piece" themed artwork selected for a live online review by a actual children's book illustrator Agent. So great! Aside from the great review(s), one of many things Nicole Tugea mentioned was the importance of showing CHILDREN in your portfolio. If the character seems like it can carry a story, along with the one being told in the illustration, even better!

Alex loves kids, showing that childlike joy in her work. It comes naturally for her.  Some of us might be lacking characters in this department though, so how about we all take a turn depicting our own imaginary (or not) child engaged somehow in a way that begs some kind of narrative?

Off we go then... into the world of childlike wonder, imagination, curiosity... and who knows what else? We'll have until Tuesday, June 7th to figure it out and come back here to sign up and tell the rest of us what we came up with. Have fun with it!

  1. Oh my, this going to be a challenge. But I find that pushing it usually is a good thing, even if the end result is not. Does that make sense?

p.s. thanks so much for adding my site to the blogroll (too bad google/blogspot 'discriminates' independent URLs ;))

  3. I've never quite able to draw children, they have always ended up looking too old to be children, so I'm thinking teenage-ish kind of chidlren... good theme though...

    have a lovely day.

    1. Lissa, that has always been my issue tooso thus the challengs. One thing Ive learned from what Aelx has learned is that for illustrating kids, its best to keep thier eyes further apart and their heads rather larger and rounder than they woudl otherwise be. Must say, pretty happy with the results this go around. So, I'll be excited to see what you do too..if you have time to do all the detail you will no doubt add as well. Teenagers are fine too...in all regards! :)
